Lancaster’s Central Market is a true American treasure.
As the country’s oldest farmers’ market, it is housed in an 1889 "Romanesque Revival" building designed by James H. Warner. The 60+ Market stand holders offer a wide variety of foods during the three market days-Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Market also includes non-food gift items. Please join us at historic Central Market for authentic Americana shopping.
"The country's oldest farmers' market, in the heart of Amish country occupies a beautiful 109 year old red brick building chock-full of local character. Regional food specialties include Pennsylvania Dutch sausage, scrapple (a breakfast meat of pork scraps and cornmeal), and headcheese (like scrapple, an acquired taste). You'll also find preserves, including chowchow (pickled vegetables in a spicy mustard sauce), and bread and butter pickles. Open Tuesdays and Fridays, 6:00 am to 4:00 pm, and Saturdays, 6:00 am to 2:00 pm year-round; the market is also a great place to buy souvenirs." USA Today (1998)
They also called Lancaster Central Market the "4th best market in the United States to visit."
Lancaster Central Market Selected as a Great American Place
In 1995 the Lyndhurst Foundation of Chattanooga, TN sponsored a competition to identify exemplary public places in the United States. Central Market was chosen as one of 63 "Great American Public Places", by a distinguished panel of professionals. Central Market was one of only three sites in Pennsylvania honored. The other two are the Italian Market and the Franklin Institute Plaza, both in Philadelphia.
